Fold Your Own Planet: A Paper Globe in Twenty Minutes
In twenty minutes you will turn one printed sheet into an actual sphere: Earth at night, Mars, Jupiter, or Pangaea. The whole trick comes from Folding Globes, which sidesteps five centuries of flat-map distortion by giving every face of a polyhedron its own tiny projection, then letting your hands reassemble the curved Earth.

Prerequisites: a printer, A4 or A3 paper (160-200 gsm card folds crisper), scissors or a craft knife, a glue stick, and an empty ballpoint pen for scoring.
Step 1: Pick your world
Browse the free catalog. It is absurdly good: twelve solar-system bodies including the Moon, Mars, Venus, Jupiter’s moons Io and Europa, Saturn’s Titan, even Pluto and Ceres; seventeen Earth-from-space themes like Earth at Night, Ocean Temperature, and Population Density; six deep-time Earths from Pangaea onward; and data globes plotting earthquakes, volcanoes, meteorite landings, and tectonic plates. Every theme credits its openly licensed sources.
Step 2: Print at exactly 100%
Print dialog → scale: 100% → A4 or A3No shrink-to-fit; scaling breaks the geometry. In the US, print the A4 file and choose fit to page, which lands cleanly on Letter.
Step 3: Cut solid lines, score dashed lines
Cut along the solid dark borders; everything outside is scrap. Before folding, run an empty ballpoint pen along the dashed fold lines. That scoring groove is the difference between crisp edges and crumpled ones.
Step 4: Fold and glue
Fold dashed lines upward → glue lilac tabs → tuck under neighboring faceWork your way around the net. The last face is famously fiddly; patience, then pride. Ordinary printer paper works, but card survives desks and backpacks. Most globes take about twenty minutes.
Step 5: Graduate to AuthaGraph
Once your hands understand polyhedral nets, look up Hajime Narukawa’s AuthaGraph map from Tokyo. It divides the globe into 96 triangles mapped onto a tetrahedron that unfolds to a near-perfect rectangle while keeping land areas proportionally honest. Printed versions fold back into the tetrahedron and refold into endless layouts, oceans centered or continents unbroken. It won Japan’s Good Design Grand Award in 2016, and it is the same idea you just executed with scissors: stop fighting the sphere, tile it instead.
Step 6: Compare shapes and go celestial
For a second opinion on the whole craft, Lyncean Education offers free Earth, Moon, and Mars PDFs in four polyhedra each, plus blank nets for designing your own. The author tested every shape and reports honestly: the cube is less goofy than expected, the octahedron is too pointy, and his favorite is a toss-up between the icosahedron and the dodecahedron, whose flat poles let the globe sit upright. His celestial spheres are the showpiece: one printed normally, and one folded inside-out into an openable clamshell so you can put your head inside the star map. Do not miss his to-scale set, where a 5.7-inch Earth and a 1.6-inch Moon turn out to belong fourteen feet apart, and a correctly scaled Sun would be the size of a house, a mile away.
Step 7: Train your folds digitally

Twelve finished lessons, from crane to lily, each validated down to immutable FOLD-format poses rather than approximated animation. Node.js 22.12+ required. The browser lessons need nothing beyond npm run dev; the motion-evidence and container test gates additionally want Chrome and Docker, but learners can ignore them.
Cleanup
Scraps in the recycling, pen capped. Locally cloned Odyssey exits with Ctrl+C; delete the folder to fully remove it.
If it breaks: a globe whose faces will not meet means the printer scaled the file; reprint at true 100%. Cracking folds mean unscored dashes; score harder. If the final tab leaves a gap, your earlier tabs sat proud of the edges; flatten each one under before gluing the next.
