Where Human Sleep Went Wrong: Stop Chasing Eight Perfect Hours
I keep meeting people who treat sleep like a performance review: eight continuous hours, 90%+ efficiency, or they failed. Kristen French’s Nautilus interview with evolutionary anthropologist David Samson (The Sleepless Ape) is a useful corrective. His fieldwork with the Hadza and other small-scale societies does not say “sleep less and party.” It says we have been optimizing the wrong scoreboard.
Humans are the short-sleeping primate with a REM-heavy night. Relative to other apes, we sleep fewer hours and pack more REM into that shorter window. Samson frames REM as overnight emotional processing: strip the charge from a memory so you can use the information without reliving the feeling. That is why trauma work increasingly treats sleep quality as part of the therapy, not a side note.
Ground sleep changed the ecology, not just the posture. Roughly 1.8 million years ago we left the trees and slept in camps. Samson compresses the enabling stack into SHELL: shelter, heat (fire), environmental preparation of camps, lux (natural light), and lookouts (social security). Call it a sleep exophenotype: we built a safer, buffered night, and our sleep pattern co-evolved with that buffer.
Fragmented sleep is not automatically broken sleep. Hadza nights were noisy, social, and inefficient by lab standards. People still reported high satisfaction. Samson’s contrast number sticks: sleep efficiency around 88% in the global north versus about 74% in small-scale off-grid groups, while those groups show stronger circadian amplitude. Duration alone does not tell you how the night felt.
You might hear that modern people are in a unique sleep dystopia. Samson does not buy the CDC’s “worst sleepers ever” story as the whole picture. Many of us already land near 7.1 hours, which sits in the cross-cultural sweet spot just under seven. Go an hour or two under or over and outcomes worsen; chronic oversleeping can flag comorbidities. The epidemic framing sells urgency. Circadian mismatch is the quieter problem.
Insomnia often looks like adaptive hypervigilance meeting modern threat cues. Your HPA axis does not know a board deck from a predator. Reframing night alertness as ancestry, not failure, can lower the panic that keeps you awake. That is anthropology, not a prescription. Persistent insomnia still belongs with a clinician.
The “lie down and die” model is industrial folklore. The folk “eight hours” tracked labor bargaining more than biology: a third of the day carved out for rest so the other two-thirds could be productive. Rigid monophasic nights fit 9-to-5 better than flexible, polyphasic rest. Biology did not invent that schedule. Factories did.
What I would change first is circadian input, not mattress spend. Samson’s own practice is boring and specific: morning outdoor full-spectrum light (with coffee), midday outdoor heat/light if he can get it, cut blue light after sundown, no food three to four hours before bed. His target for outdoor time is at least 15% of waking hours. Most indoor lives miss that by a mile. Cool, dark, safe bedrooms are gains. Keep them. Add the signals the body still expects.
The takeaway: Stop grading yourself on continuous eight-hour efficiency. Protect a cool dark room, then spend real daylight and temperature variation outdoors, especially in the morning, and treat night screens as melatonin sabotage. If sleep still falls apart for weeks, see a doctor. Do not CRISPR your way to four hours because Rangers can grind on three.
