Your Gas Stove Rivals the Freeway: The Indoor Air Finding We Kept Missing

We spent fifty years cleaning up the air outside and almost no time measuring the air inside. A new Stanford-led study in PNAS Nexus closes that gap, and its headline number is simple: replacing a gas stove with electric cuts your nitrogen dioxide exposure by more than a quarter on average, and by about half if you cook a lot.

  1. This is the first national comparison of indoor and outdoor NO2 sources. The team combined indoor measurements with outdoor air data, building characteristics for 133 million US homes, and statistical sampling of how people actually behave. The output is zip-code-level maps of long-term and short-term exposure, indoors and out.

  2. The equivalence is the shocker. Senior author Rob Jackson’s line: if you cook with gas, you are often breathing as much NO2 from your stove indoors as from every outdoor source combined. The freeway outside and the burner inside, in the same league.

  3. The stakes run from wheezing to cancer. NO2 is linked to asthma, obstructive pulmonary disease, preterm birth, diabetes, and lung cancer. Earlier work from the same lab found stove pollution lingers for hours after the burner clicks off, and that gas stoves also emit benzene, a leukemia-linked carcinogen.

  4. Twenty-two million Americans cross a line their outdoor air would never cross alone. For them, cooking with gas pushes total NO2 past recommended long-term safety thresholds. Small homes concentrate it; rural areas lean on stoves proportionally hardest; big cities see the highest totals where small apartments meet dirty outdoor air.

  5. The bursts matter as much as the averages. The highest short-term exposures measured in homes all came from stove use, because gas cooking arrives in concentrated puffs rather than a steady haze. Your worst air moments of the week probably happen at dinnertime.

  6. Now the counterargument, which the authors themselves provide: for most Americans, outdoor sources like cars and trucks still dominate total NO2 exposure, so ditching your stove will not fix your air on its own. And the equity finding cuts both ways; American Indian and Alaska Native households already carry 60% higher long-term exposure than average, Black and Hispanic households 20% higher, largely from outdoor sources they did not choose.

  7. What makes this piece actionable is cost. A portable induction cooktop starts under $50, electric kettles and toaster ovens chip away at burner time, a range hood or open window helps, and rebates plus federal tax credits can offset a full electric swap. You do not need a renovation this weekend to cut your dose starting tonight.

The takeaway: Check whether your kitchen has gas tonight, and if it does, move one cooking task to an electric appliance this week while you price the full switch. The Clean Air Act cleaned the outdoors; nobody has cleaned your kitchen except you.
