Three Endless Cities That Play Themselves
🎵 Three Endless Cities That Play Themselves
Three browser tabs that never repeat themselves: a pixel city that composes its own lofi, a rainy nightscape with two volume sliders, and an 8-bit landscape cycling a full day. Put one on when choosing the music would already be procrastinating.
Lofi Cities is the deep one. Forty pixel cities, each a 480×270 loop, with music composed live in your browser: Rhodes-led jazzhop around 68 to 88 BPM by default, eighteen styles from bossa to chiptune to oud, tape wobble and vinyl crackle baked in, no samples and no AI model. A per-sound city mixer, follow-the-night tours, Pomodoro and sleep timers, and a radio mode where every listener hears the same generated track. Deep work, fullscreen, interface hidden.
Rainy City is the simple one. An isometric rainy cityscape with rain volume and city volume and not much else to decide, open source under GPLv3, built by John Aiken as a Recurse Center side project out of rainymood nostalgia and SimCity love. Arcade games and a YouTube radio station orbit it. Reading, thinking, rain-only focus.
Living Worlds is the silent one. Mark Ferrari’s dithered 8-bit landscapes cycling time of day in HTML5, Classic or Blend modes, palettes to swap, an optional sound toggle. No music at all, which is the point: the visuals are the track. Staring out the window without owning a window.
The shared trick is sound you never pick. Playlists demand decisions; these three remove them. Generative lofi, procedural rain, a sun that rises on a timer: nothing repeats, nothing asks for attention. That absence is the entire productivity argument, and it works.
Notes: Lofi Cities needs a click to start audio and JavaScript throughout. Rainy City is one person’s side project with the rough edges that implies. Living Worlds pairs best with one of the tracks below, since it brings pictures, not sound.
Start here: the sites above are endless, so these fixed recordings stand in as neighbors. Dark jazz for the rainy night, two hours of floating lofi for the work session, Ferrari dithering as video.
