Science and Space for Kids

PhET, NASA Space Place, ESA Kids, Science Buddies, Exploratorium. Browser. Free.

A subscription science kit is mostly vinegar, baking soda, and a cardboard box with a logo. The experiments are not the scarce part. The scarce part is knowing which one to do on a wet Saturday, and what to say when it works.

  1. PhET first, because it shows the invisible thing. University of Colorado’s simulations let a child build a circuit, drop a skater down a ramp, or watch a wave interfere, then change one variable. Over a hundred sims, no login, runs on a school laptop.

  2. NASA Space Place is the one children return to without being asked. Games, crafts, skywatching tips, and DSN Uplink-Downlink, where you aim the Deep Space Network’s antennas at a spacecraft. The kids’ art gallery is a better hook than any badge.

  3. ESA Kids does the thing NASA’s site mostly does not: story. Paxi the alien explains the solar system, cartoons cover Rosetta and BepiColombo, and the whole thing exists in more than a dozen languages. Science and vocabulary at once.

  4. Science Buddies is for the parent, not the child. More than a thousand project guides, each with materials, cost, difficulty, and time, filterable by age. Read the time estimate before you agree to anything. That number is the whole negotiation.

  5. Exploratorium Science Snacks are museum exhibits cut down to table size. Cheap materials, printable instructions, and an explanation of why it works, which most kits skip. A kid who knows why the balloon sticks keeps the trick. A kid who only knows the trick is done in ten minutes.

  6. The caveat is the two names on every other list. Mystery Science and Generation Genius are good, and neither is free. One sells a trial through a school and the other unlocks a little with a free account and sells the rest. Use what they give you, then go back to PhET.

Play it if: you want one Saturday that ends with a working circuit and a messy table. Skip it if: you need a graded curriculum with worksheets, which is a school’s job, not a website’s.
