Kids Coding Games: Start With Scratch, End With Python

Kids Coding Games

Scratch, Blockly Games, CodeCombat, MakeCode. Browser and tablet. Start at scratch.mit.edu.

There is a working path from “what is a variable” to writing Python, and every step of it is free. It fails when a child gets pushed from blocks to text a year too early and decides coding is homework.

  1. Scratch is the floor, and the floor is high. MIT built it, 200 million kids use it, and it costs nothing. Blocks teach sequencing, events, and debugging without typing. Most paid beginner classes are this screen with a person reading it aloud.

  2. Blockly Games is the bridge almost nobody mentions. Eight short puzzles, each teaching one idea: Maze for loops, Turtle for angles, Pond for JavaScript, since the towers in that last game are functions. A motivated kid can finish in a weekend and arrive at text code without a lecture.

  3. CodeCombat is the one that feels like a game, and the paywall is real. You type Python or JavaScript to move a hero through a dungeon. The opening levels are free, then it wants a subscription, so decide before the kid is invested.

  4. MakeCode turns the screen into something physical. Microsoft’s free editor covers micro:bit, Minecraft, and Arcade. Build a shooter with blocks, switch the view to JavaScript, and watch the same program turn into text. That flip teaches more than a week of slides.

  5. Order matters more than the tool. Scratch from about 8, Blockly at 9, CodeCombat or MakeCode at 10, a real editor around 12. Jump earlier and you get tears. Later and you get boredom.

  6. The caveat nobody selling a course will say: these tools do not teach persistence. A child stuck on a bug needs an adult who sits there and does not take the mouse. Twenty minutes at the elbow beats two hours of instruction.

Play it if: your kid asks how games are made, or has already built something in Scratch and wants a next step. Skip it if: they want to play games, not build them. CodeCombat blurs that line, briefly.
